Donate Life

The greatest gift anyone can give is the gift of life.  Organ donation is one way that you can do that.  Many people have questions about organ donation and are unsure about the process.  I will attempt to answer those questions today and get the word out about organ donation.  This issue is particularly close to my heart as without an organ donation, I may have never been able to grow up with my grandmother.  Become an organ donor today!

How does organ donation work?

Organ donation occurs when the “donor” passes away and wishes to give the gift of life to other individuals.  When this occurs, organs such as liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, pancreas and intestinal organs, and corneas (part of the eye), among many other organs, can be removed from the donor and transplanted into the individuals in need of said organ.  Donors are treated with respect and family members are informed about all procedures prior to organ harvesting.  Family can choose which organs are donated and which are not.

There is a possibility of donating parts of the eyes and tissues as well.  With the eyes, the corneas are harvested and this generally does not affect the appearance outwardly of the body.  Tissues are used in tendon grafts, skin grafting, bone transplants and other procedures.  According to Donate Life America, over 100,000 patients are currently waiting for organ, eye, and tissue transplants.

How do I sign up?

There are several ways to sign up to be an organ donor.  Nebraska Organ Recovery, the group in charge of organ donation in Nebraska, is trying to get donors signed up, which can be done on their website.  The national organ donation group, Donate Life America, is also actively trying to get donors signed up.  Go to or to sign up or get more information.  By putting your name on a registry, you are not obligating yourself to any donation.  You can also sign up when renewing your driver’s license.

Your family members still have to agree to the process so it is important to let them know of your wishes and intention to donate organs, eyes, and tissues.  Talk with your family members about what type of donation (any or all of the above organs, eyes, and tissues) you want to make.  Save a life today and sign up to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor.
